The Guidance Center’s Parents as Teacher’s staff wanted to lift the morale of service members that are now unable to go home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. One of the home visitor’s son serves in the Navy and is currently stationed at the Patuxent River Naval Base in Maryland. Through conversations with her son, it was discovered that the servicemen and women that are stationed on the base will not be permitted to leave the state because of the increase in COVID-19 cases. The base has several dorm style barracks where single sailors live and while some of these sailors will be able to spend a couple of hours with some of the families that live in the housing area on the base, it does not make up for being with their own family. A Christmas card project was created to let these servicemen and women know that they are appreciated for all that they do for our country. The home visitor’s son has volunteered to personally handout Christmas cards to the residents in the barracks. Some cards have started to arrive and the sailors that have received a card are very appreciative and honored. The address to send cards to the Patuxent River Naval Base is:
